My mum made dust <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">ruffles</span> and pillow shams for my cousins and she sent the fabric through a her <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">ruffler</span> to make them very full and and very girly. I've been bugging my aunt to find a picture of them, so hopefully I can add that soon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTiOEldYR6yQSWQjwQZp5GRV_7A6cQsdWmBFZdf0VNmrIFBXC0QBrEK9JWJHscjLLg6cIK2eS0507W8nBFhS6pYrgQHMwUzBitdiaRcutZ7wzrV0Pg1l48DmpxNBz5cfJ9pq76vtCklbqz/s1600/IMG_2482.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTiOEldYR6yQSWQjwQZp5GRV_7A6cQsdWmBFZdf0VNmrIFBXC0QBrEK9JWJHscjLLg6cIK2eS0507W8nBFhS6pYrgQHMwUzBitdiaRcutZ7wzrV0Pg1l48DmpxNBz5cfJ9pq76vtCklbqz/s320/IMG_2482.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
You can see she used her overcast seger to finish all the edges with fantastic bright pink. Most of the left over yardage was <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">ruffled</span> and edged with that awesome pink, plus about a yard of the original fabric.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I came up with this blouse:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGkfWeb6Fp5DhN1psRbufqAFFg8ivgPHpNVnRq64n0LAW7b48zt94NomuS_7EH8HkU4vNHkN5m3eF0tVEvg5GBgkrOP_rUpsisfWavsXgh6Dg8cq0bbZDF4-m_wy5FwMNI1mX50M_U7Gwo/s1600/IMG_2481.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGkfWeb6Fp5DhN1psRbufqAFFg8ivgPHpNVnRq64n0LAW7b48zt94NomuS_7EH8HkU4vNHkN5m3eF0tVEvg5GBgkrOP_rUpsisfWavsXgh6Dg8cq0bbZDF4-m_wy5FwMNI1mX50M_U7Gwo/s320/IMG_2481.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here is the blouse with and smaller sized dress and a skirt besides: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(sorry bad lighting with all this cloudy weather)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwNnCzuuaJwjk_XbyWlUx6qvFxXouLN_9hmRgfAr4ZgrvBPYTJSsJ-ADtDWSFwURg7WSZWexFAX0aWLa_0JGiC_pcNNhAsrfAO0h3hRoF4ouDzy1sAn7bWPRX8-xalZbKgki5k8326yTPR/s1600/IMG_2480.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwNnCzuuaJwjk_XbyWlUx6qvFxXouLN_9hmRgfAr4ZgrvBPYTJSsJ-ADtDWSFwURg7WSZWexFAX0aWLa_0JGiC_pcNNhAsrfAO0h3hRoF4ouDzy1sAn7bWPRX8-xalZbKgki5k8326yTPR/s320/IMG_2480.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I think I like it better as clothes than as a bedding. We'll see what my Kate thinks in 3 years when she fits into that little dress :) Hope she likes it too!<br />
<br />
And I have a favor to ask, could you push that little "follow" button over there ---><br />
That way you will know every time there is a story. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #4c1130; font-size: x-large;">Thanks!</span><br />
<br />
Alright, so I know I'm suppose to have one project a week, does this count as 3 projects so I'm not so far behind? I've got several more (almost) ready and (not quite) waiting. They are going to be great so be sure to check them out at my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/thecottonchronicles" target="_blank">Etsy Shop</a>!<br />
<br />
Happy New Year!<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Would you like a new shirt or skirt out of these fabrics?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQpU8-WrnT2ympwu5OeaS9Kw4PDNVqvBHGvORu9l6zNuwTYzJE9fVurP2k0AWr5dwM1OR9uE9mk0kxhfoNxy8wmYLC3WLiolr_Jtr11_IfyTAMvhciXkIS5hIRL5vEe77IvCUxcgSCzyBN/s1600/IMG_2286.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQpU8-WrnT2ympwu5OeaS9Kw4PDNVqvBHGvORu9l6zNuwTYzJE9fVurP2k0AWr5dwM1OR9uE9mk0kxhfoNxy8wmYLC3WLiolr_Jtr11_IfyTAMvhciXkIS5hIRL5vEe77IvCUxcgSCzyBN/s1600/IMG_2286.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">I didn't think so!</span></div>
I know they made somebody happy in 1982, but 20 years later they just aren't so charming. But I HAVE to use them. It is part of the Rules I gave myself when taking on this challenge. If none of us are willing to wear them, we are left with quilt or craft. I'm not up to quilting just yet, but Christmas is here so I'm going make a Christmas craft.<br />
<br />
There isn't enough of the scary florals, so I incorporated some less attractive dead tree fabric, plaid, and polk-a-dot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOW9i3ZWMJqye322lb0RMqb6RxpC9b0chRaB1tJafbhUyA79uXpn3OdiUs3YT4M2SqzVLvmilDCK1znQe_sjbcIfvRjo7tDz49tIef7FXgnCV9lBAUvhbfsY4BRFzQCgOWuZg46EHkh2i0/s1600/IMG_2303.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOW9i3ZWMJqye322lb0RMqb6RxpC9b0chRaB1tJafbhUyA79uXpn3OdiUs3YT4M2SqzVLvmilDCK1znQe_sjbcIfvRjo7tDz49tIef7FXgnCV9lBAUvhbfsY4BRFzQCgOWuZg46EHkh2i0/s1600/IMG_2303.JPG" width="240" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">+</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTXYmLfW5bNrxabs069CUpDUE4lfyFFktKlTpuCeo_QSO6o5p5OW11V2gYD_0T_6kNWOvAjZxVtJQ4nm_ArweuhOk-yzLZ7ObGjQmh18Qzxf1imQn3eek6g5cIjS17kCsFpvlY3meAwZvW/s1600/IMG_2287.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTXYmLfW5bNrxabs069CUpDUE4lfyFFktKlTpuCeo_QSO6o5p5OW11V2gYD_0T_6kNWOvAjZxVtJQ4nm_ArweuhOk-yzLZ7ObGjQmh18Qzxf1imQn3eek6g5cIjS17kCsFpvlY3meAwZvW/s1600/IMG_2287.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got the idea for this project when I saw a picture of a tomato cage wrapped in garland and ribbon, but being on a strict "use what you got" creators diet, I had to think even further outside the box, or out side the cage as the case may be :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_KwTr7p4AGqdA-Y5i4dK3bojEKNdHH_k4AoUnGYE5G287rPmMmwi8GXiMvOqGNQBGgpt6SmgGXqvJHlYrnlJmjTL4zsxFHc5Pwbojmdqd5UlrsUr5id8R-5SpgljbAm3fW5BWAVEOmZuM/s1600/IMG_2304.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_KwTr7p4AGqdA-Y5i4dK3bojEKNdHH_k4AoUnGYE5G287rPmMmwi8GXiMvOqGNQBGgpt6SmgGXqvJHlYrnlJmjTL4zsxFHc5Pwbojmdqd5UlrsUr5id8R-5SpgljbAm3fW5BWAVEOmZuM/s1600/IMG_2304.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">TaDa!</span><br />
<br />
<br />
And it didn't cost a penny.<br />
And it will be super small to store because it is just strips of fabric that I will tie back on next year after the cages have supported another season of tomatoes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSm8CBpbrQLjspfEVr8rViU0DXQ_1bDAQLxMEyoGRoSzu5uE4sSVkM3x_G1RaEr3kad86jGqNs89KqRk417fiXsPVmJi2f9_1JbNCKqnsEOTheTbWEv3WEMLvFE2Jfq12DuoYdxyixskvz/s1600/IMG_2301.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSm8CBpbrQLjspfEVr8rViU0DXQ_1bDAQLxMEyoGRoSzu5uE4sSVkM3x_G1RaEr3kad86jGqNs89KqRk417fiXsPVmJi2f9_1JbNCKqnsEOTheTbWEv3WEMLvFE2Jfq12DuoYdxyixskvz/s1600/IMG_2301.JPG" width="308" /></a></div>
<br />
And this is my festive front porch.<br />
The wreath is bare, I agree.<br />
I have some fabric . . . :)<br />
<br />
Do you have ugly green fabric? Do you have a empty tomato cages in your garage? Yes? EXCELLENT! Get to work!<br />
<br />
I used two tomato cages stacked together to get more of a round shape instead of a triangle. My fabric strips are 5 inches wide.<br />
Sew the strips together, tie them off to the bottom of your cage where wire cross so they don't just slip around and then twirl as desired.<br />
I think a big bow on the top might be a need. I'll work on that.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Thanks for dropping by! Have a very Merry Christmas!</span></div>

Two of my dearest friends whom I also consider my sisters since I don't have any were my bridesmaids.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Beautiful aren't they! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The dresses are made from a crinkled taffeta with my sash matching. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Not much, but enough to make two very cute dresses. One 3T flower girl dress and just enough after that to squeeze out a little 6 month old dress. </div>

It is hard to believe. On one hand I can't remember life without her, and on the other it seems like we just brought her home from the hospital.<br />
I wanted to make Kate something festive for the holiday.<br />
<u>But there is a problem:</u> she will drool and spit up all over whatever I put on her. I can always put a bib on her, but then you can even see the cute thing I made her because it is all covered up<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"> (I go through this dilemma every week before church). </span><br />
<u>The answer:</u> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">A Festive Bib!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXJLnZEKAjCFvMBWtUuaBLoDwh8yDnN8vcvwxmHCQxZQ3f9nLBKRTOJnPet5rBXeqvKGakQkgLe_Kljau5HRdMRqF3lSM0x8FatwF1BiwLjIKD2y1ouSv2I6JYkIOdn82TNHlxwFBCmWDC/s1600/IMG_2235.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXJLnZEKAjCFvMBWtUuaBLoDwh8yDnN8vcvwxmHCQxZQ3f9nLBKRTOJnPet5rBXeqvKGakQkgLe_Kljau5HRdMRqF3lSM0x8FatwF1BiwLjIKD2y1ouSv2I6JYkIOdn82TNHlxwFBCmWDC/s1600/IMG_2235.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was a great variety of material, so every bib is unique!</div>

Naturally I have half of a box with fall fabrics <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(the other half is 4th of July, we'll get to that later)</span>, but I wanted the turkey to stand out a bit, have some distinct shape and texture. I decided to make him out of leather. Yes, I have a bunch of leather, not because mom planned on making anybody leather pants. This is from my own stash. When I taught sewing at a junior high, I got a local Interior Design store to donate all their out dated sample fabrics for curtains and upholstery for the students to play and practice on. The leather however was leading to a bunch of broken needles and headaches, so I took it home.<br />

I have one whole box labeled "80s" and it is the one I know the very least what to do with. But this piece I <i>love</i>! Mom bought it shortly after having me in 1985 from ZCMI.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggB4d6XS-TKRWHdtTfII-9Q40pmDPdRmy4zIUAGBQGZBtbjxy9lCJR3OqjVR3HKbD1xnamhL-dlX29wnf3io4RgF2P08YJ00H7UL3knnoF2zv_UPXwwSSzIZoj83dsFqybZNc-pferhzAm/s1600/IMG_1957.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggB4d6XS-TKRWHdtTfII-9Q40pmDPdRmy4zIUAGBQGZBtbjxy9lCJR3OqjVR3HKbD1xnamhL-dlX29wnf3io4RgF2P08YJ00H7UL3knnoF2zv_UPXwwSSzIZoj83dsFqybZNc-pferhzAm/s320/IMG_1957.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
What I love is 1st, ZCMI doesn't even exist anymore, but when it did it was a department store. Yup, like Dillard's only they sold fabric and notions and needle work too. Mum worked there for several years, which certainly contributed to her fabric collections. Being surrounded by fabric certainly ups your chances of buying it.<br />
<br />
In 1985 this fabric cost $1.99 per yard. I spent more on buttons in 2012 than she did on fabric in 1985. Crazy, yes?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ularNjA7tZ_EpZVgmtUwXYb63AoR_sGBOcJKthBKAjjaW0o5ZkCs-cPZyDGLjm0i0VCUDs-hAZlpv_ILPCjpEnD8iO1T_B9NP706C_X700yR6upPzsHyG0EBAp07fvLZhVZfxjh4spdW/s1600/IMG_1962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ularNjA7tZ_EpZVgmtUwXYb63AoR_sGBOcJKthBKAjjaW0o5ZkCs-cPZyDGLjm0i0VCUDs-hAZlpv_ILPCjpEnD8iO1T_B9NP706C_X700yR6upPzsHyG0EBAp07fvLZhVZfxjh4spdW/s320/IMG_1962.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Well mom had intended to make one of those oversized shirts that were so big back then. I wanted to keep that idea, but update it a bit. So I designed an outfit that would keep that fullness, with a slightly exaggerated collar, but lengthened it into a dress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit_a7RVD-WTyCeSoL9dB0cD_TLr4zi7Y898aWDO43OwhrIV4-KlM3NeVh6Ft7PzimFVoXQxHS5VZA3TzuNCrZvcmDYEknpw2PKwYX34IQzJbABG8EDfWqVd-TObi79IiL37hqUNFbicXZ1/s1600/IMG_2222.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit_a7RVD-WTyCeSoL9dB0cD_TLr4zi7Y898aWDO43OwhrIV4-KlM3NeVh6Ft7PzimFVoXQxHS5VZA3TzuNCrZvcmDYEknpw2PKwYX34IQzJbABG8EDfWqVd-TObi79IiL37hqUNFbicXZ1/s640/IMG_2222.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What do you think?</div>
I love it! And I wore it to church already, sorry this one was for me, not for sale :)<br />
<br />
Now I would just like to point out that on this side seam here, and across the front. Do you see how the stripe continues? Wherever you buy your clothes, this is a sign of quality you should look for. Matching stripes and plaids are a hallmark of good craftsmanship in clothing construction.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">Not every line will match (most likely not the collar or sleeve), but absolutely obvious lines like the center and side seam definitely should. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>

My mom and I used to be really into porcelain dolls, particularly dolls by Marie Osmand. One year for Christmas she bought me the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">AdoraBelle</span> Christmas doll. Dolls and little girls in frilly Christmas dresses are cute and all, but a doll in Christmas PJs, that is <i>way</i> more fun.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"> Isn't she cute!</span></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Well, if you're going to spend the money on a Marie Osmand full body porcelain doll, you really ought to enjoy it more than 1/12 of the year. So mom bought this really adorable coordinating <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;"><a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCottonChronicles" target="_blank">Honey Bears and Bee</a></span> fabric. It was going to make my little AdoraBelle an outfit for the rest of the year. She even got enough fabric to make a little quilt to match.<br />
While my baby dolls and Barbies got <i>huge</i> wardrobes, AdoraBelle is still in her PJs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXbWuXsungmhjuaWBuNsBGzj4grElVe_xSuUNPgbQb_i7CiXGl0SMQXxJxtnGTreNth8ysELa00vgBUPSpaneZ-g61HOCKTPvtSCaRZUdaS-Al1d7v98jrYF2hnlG4VrA2t6v1aACqn3SU/s1600/IMG_2151.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXbWuXsungmhjuaWBuNsBGzj4grElVe_xSuUNPgbQb_i7CiXGl0SMQXxJxtnGTreNth8ysELa00vgBUPSpaneZ-g61HOCKTPvtSCaRZUdaS-Al1d7v98jrYF2hnlG4VrA2t6v1aACqn3SU/s320/IMG_2151.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
I wanted to keep with the idea of making a doll outfit, but rather than a quilt, I turned our <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCottonChronicles" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">Honey Bears and Bees</span> </a> into matching little girls' outfits.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">
So there is a dress/jumper for the girly girl. Very Southern, yes?</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And a top with shorts for the less girly girl (but with ruffles, so still pretty girly I guess). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I really love this pattern because the back has elastic.<br />
Between the elastic and the adjustable straps, this dress could fit your girl for years. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And yes, we definitely need a cute hair flowers to match. </div>

I ran out of the <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #b45f06;"><a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCottonChronicles" target="_blank">Honey Bears</a></span>, but still had a lot of <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #b45f06;"><a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCottonChronicles" target="_blank">Bees</a></span>. Since I hadn't spent much money yet, I used my $2 to buy a little more fabric and finish the job. Not the cutest dress ever, but every scrap of this project is sewn!<br />
Remember, if you would like to be the proud owner of a Honey Bears and Bees outfit, go the <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheCottonChronicles" target="_blank">The Cotton Chronicles </a>shop on Etsy.<br />

Since my sewing room is the same room as my nursery, most of these boxes reside in the garage. I only bring 3-4 projects in the house at a time to try and keep some measure of order and organization.<br />
<br />
I'm just like every other procrastinator out there. I will always put off a project to the last minute. I did it in high school, I did it in college, I even did it in my post graduate studies and still got good grades throughout it all. I attribute this to working well under pressure. This being said, I'm going to have to apply some pressure to myself to complete this project. With no professor handing out a due date, all that fabric might still be there in 5 years . . . <i>Yikes!</i><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Here are the </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Rules of The Cotton Chronicles:</span></div>
#1 I have to complete at least 1 project a week<br />
#2 The 12-ish boxes and bins must be down to 3 boxes and bins 18 months from now<br />
#3 I am not allowed to spend more than $2.00 on additional materials to finish the project<br />
#4 I have to use every scrap that is 8" x 11" or bigger. I can only throw it out if it is smaller than this.<br />
<br />
Case in point: <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: red; font-size: large;">Watermelons!</span><br />
<br />
This adorable fabric is left over from a time when Mom and I were really into<i> table runners and matching napkins</i>. Don't you wish you had a table runner and matching napkins out of this fabric?! <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(Sarah Simons out there anywhere? Didn't I give you one when you got married?)</span><br />
<br />
Okay so there was too much to throw out (and who would want to anyway!). But not enough left to make another set of napkins. Into a box it went for 8ish years. But now we are putting it to work. What should it turn into now?<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">A super cute child's top: </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha9Dv5d04Lr-m03VugyxBdctTLlQ7mJn7I0ToG7oQ1TrnLFzTE47mjL6POWDikfG9IGgi4l174-X_liy-yxBc19WB9Bab_esrZag7xSCLiwI7mrQcSvHM4DBrAOQTx7nnmpc25GWgyVWsr/s1600/IMG_1731.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha9Dv5d04Lr-m03VugyxBdctTLlQ7mJn7I0ToG7oQ1TrnLFzTE47mjL6POWDikfG9IGgi4l174-X_liy-yxBc19WB9Bab_esrZag7xSCLiwI7mrQcSvHM4DBrAOQTx7nnmpc25GWgyVWsr/s320/IMG_1731.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Do you like it? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieJywW2cO_FkLblP4-QUsypQFlEbc97Ogo0CYk6Fd30HHuQWsUOHAgbuUb4_DR1moa1S-3wjh94t4OKNPlbKSsPLJguz9w2JCnw1IB-Cq_zkrhIEPXdrPwJViGjRj0DtXLcjLzXfLkChEm/s1600/IMG_1761.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieJywW2cO_FkLblP4-QUsypQFlEbc97Ogo0CYk6Fd30HHuQWsUOHAgbuUb4_DR1moa1S-3wjh94t4OKNPlbKSsPLJguz9w2JCnw1IB-Cq_zkrhIEPXdrPwJViGjRj0DtXLcjLzXfLkChEm/s320/IMG_1761.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And there were <i>still</i> left overs, so why not make a hair flower accessory to match?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6r2BHLoing6wkynwwbrIjux5Mbt6vTFibnI1Eo64DRycxmvEGBqWz5_18BepT8wn_K9lr5Fw9u1mLSbFXKZPez3sIVHiSeBpNqq8kQQNFQ2yDXngpVCKi6Q84OsMwXoSUn6D5yEx9U2Kr/s1600/IMG_1734.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6r2BHLoing6wkynwwbrIjux5Mbt6vTFibnI1Eo64DRycxmvEGBqWz5_18BepT8wn_K9lr5Fw9u1mLSbFXKZPez3sIVHiSeBpNqq8kQQNFQ2yDXngpVCKi6Q84OsMwXoSUn6D5yEx9U2Kr/s320/IMG_1734.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
And there are <i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">still</span></i> left overs . . .<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhacMhcY0CCPiqDHmtx11nTxNmbxWqG5L2hvA-jBtfQDVoZPixffsGWYDfVrE3V0WBNBHSnD0i7qKVWQ_3TUSCsmYgtPCjV70sScwl5XdYDZGm-TKSqfbIM9-GmYAEvSK5mXrtcnsc7f-iI/s1600/IMG_1964.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhacMhcY0CCPiqDHmtx11nTxNmbxWqG5L2hvA-jBtfQDVoZPixffsGWYDfVrE3V0WBNBHSnD0i7qKVWQ_3TUSCsmYgtPCjV70sScwl5XdYDZGm-TKSqfbIM9-GmYAEvSK5mXrtcnsc7f-iI/s320/IMG_1964.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So my little Kate can have a little skirt and another hair flower. </div>
(It will probably fit her come December or January. Great timing, I know. Maybe it will be a gift for her cousin instead.)<br />
<br />
So I <i>barely</i> kept Rule #3. I had to buy a zipper to go in the back of the shirt, but I had a coupon so that was $1.70 and then there were the hair clips and elastic in the skirt. Do I have to count tax?<br />
<br />
Finally the left overs <i>really</i> are just scraps and I can throw them out. Woohoo!<br />
One project down, a few thousand to go :)<br />
<br />
Don't forget, this top is now for sale on <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/108535785/watermelon-tunic" target="_blank">Etsy</a>! Wouldn't your little girl or granddaughter or friend's granddaughter look adorable in it?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16472957236507401355noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432814548160362511.post-1603735202223884772012-09-28T08:24:00.001-07:002012-09-28T18:36:24.980-07:00The Story Behind the ScrapsAnyone who know my mum, Ruthie Knowlton, knows she is a terrific seamstress. I used to tease her that she had sewn enough stitches to sew all the way around the world.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Her repertoire ranges</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
from <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">Costumes</span> to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Confirmation</span> dresses</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
from <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Pajamas</span> to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Pinafores</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
from <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Quilts</span> to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Couch covers</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
from <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Barbie</span> clothes to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Bridal</span> gowns </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
from <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Maternity</span> to <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Matronly</span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Not to mention my entire wardrobe from birth to about 13 years old <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(when I was starting to get too cool). </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">She can do it all! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(except bathing suits, but that is a story for another day)</span></div>
<br />
But for all those <i>thousands</i> of projects she complete, a few fell by the way side. Or there were sizable leftover that couldn't just be thrown away.<br />
<br />
After 30ish years of left overs or the occasional unmade project, this is what your sewing room might look like:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghH4ELsfWGgsp6yjmwLCEcteGRMknWqo8HpIdSYXd173ADEQekExK9-0ovpZdcQtsiGeCLv5Pa4waHw8lpYorPxh80wH_rybW7ccyN3cwS9Ruv20stW2PC9_PFR3xcyV96u5YpZu1pLAzF/s1600/IMG_1864.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghH4ELsfWGgsp6yjmwLCEcteGRMknWqo8HpIdSYXd173ADEQekExK9-0ovpZdcQtsiGeCLv5Pa4waHw8lpYorPxh80wH_rybW7ccyN3cwS9Ruv20stW2PC9_PFR3xcyV96u5YpZu1pLAzF/s640/IMG_1864.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">*I'm the the one that pulled it out of the closet and piled it up*</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: large;">Impressed?</span><br />
I sure was. But then after I boxed it all up again, I found more . . .<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqxR_56y0HMGIgToBTpquR0aMkmcmeQs9QjiZHYH1Cl61o336LsLA9htspRj9-n5xUsVkAeWUoVc8zFt6fMEItzNFy1i1dblSr7tAeRArmrSShMXILLxdeutxLP8q_HqOIgOlHPg82hZ13/s1600/IMG_1874.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="tweed anyone?" border="0" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqxR_56y0HMGIgToBTpquR0aMkmcmeQs9QjiZHYH1Cl61o336LsLA9htspRj9-n5xUsVkAeWUoVc8zFt6fMEItzNFy1i1dblSr7tAeRArmrSShMXILLxdeutxLP8q_HqOIgOlHPg82hZ13/s320/IMG_1874.JPG" title="how about some wool?" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">Some lace, corduroy, and fantastic wool</span></div>
<br />
But then I kicked something under her bed on accident. What was it? More fabric?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-D6cW3FdZJhNhgw0dKsk_eqSyMV4TkHmuJmD3z7U8mHK8wCvoFnkUIL9xMAIrWfz6mydg-eNeJ-scynMQwZsU9KvOYkMkkZfVp4xYoUunE_J0BLHSk_l4GtlvZo6PL0NY8LV-jqZIeIMF/s1600/IMG_1888.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-D6cW3FdZJhNhgw0dKsk_eqSyMV4TkHmuJmD3z7U8mHK8wCvoFnkUIL9xMAIrWfz6mydg-eNeJ-scynMQwZsU9KvOYkMkkZfVp4xYoUunE_J0BLHSk_l4GtlvZo6PL0NY8LV-jqZIeIMF/s320/IMG_1888.JPG" style="cursor: move;" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">Yup.</span></div>
Anyone who has sewn enough that these are mostly left overs has more than a story:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
She has a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">saga</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She has an <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">allegory</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Here at <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><i>The Cotton Chronicles</i></span>, I am following in her footsteps. Taking one piece of fabric at a time I am going to tell you tales behind it and sew it into something new.<br />
