Bold 80's Plaid

Now we will be revisiting the 80s frequently in this blog. I have one whole box labeled "80s" and it is the one I know the very least what to do with. But this piece I love! Mom bought it shortly after having me in 1985 from ZCMI.

What I love is 1st, ZCMI doesn't even exist anymore, but when it did it was a department store. Yup, like Dillard's only they sold fabric and notions and needle work too. Mum worked there for several years, which certainly contributed to her fabric collections. Being surrounded by fabric certainly ups your chances of buying it.

In 1985 this fabric cost $1.99 per yard. I spent more on buttons in 2012 than she did on fabric in 1985. Crazy, yes?
Well mom had intended to make one of those oversized shirts that were so big back then. I wanted to keep that idea, but update it a bit. So I designed an outfit that would keep that fullness, with a slightly exaggerated collar, but lengthened it into a dress.

What do you think?
I love it! And I wore it to church already, sorry this one was for me, not for sale :)

Now I would just like to point out that on this side seam here, and across the front. Do you see how the stripe continues? Wherever you buy your clothes, this is a sign of quality you should look for. Matching stripes and plaids are a hallmark of good craftsmanship in clothing construction.
Not every line will match (most likely not the collar or sleeve), but absolutely obvious lines like the center and side seam definitely should.
